When the “Thing” Stops Working

I have a friend who got 1 DUI (alcohol), and he decided that it wasn’t working for him anymore. So he quit.  Just like that.  I was simply astounded – what a SUPERPOWER!

I’m a bit more stubborn (one of my superpowers – if you can call it that) and I really tried to make it work.  It took 3 trips to county jail, 7 trips through treatment, and a whole lot of guilt and shame before I decided that the alcohol wasn’t cutting it anymore.  It wasn’t making me feel normal, it was seldom fun anymore, and it was becoming more trouble than it was worth.  I’ve tried it out a couple of times to check to see if anything had changed, but it hasn’t.  So I let it go.

Maybe you are at a point in your life when the “thing” you’ve been leaning on just… stops working. Maybe it’s the job you’ve outgrown but keep showing up for anyway. Maybe it’s the glass of wine after work to take the edge off. Maybe it’s the relationship you keep trying to resuscitate.  But the “thing” that once felt familiar, now feels impossible to maintain.

And when that moment hits, it’s easy to think something is wrong with you.
But here’s the truth: nothing is wrong.

It’s your soul whispering, “You’ve outgrown this version of yourself.”

I can always feel that whisper long before I admit it. I’ll negotiate with it. I’ll justify things. I’ll tell myself, “It’s fine. I can make this work.” But growth and healing have their own rhythm, and when your energy shifts, anything misaligned starts to feel tight, heavy, or strangely foreign — like wearing an outfit that doesn’t fit anymore, no matter how hard you tug at it.

And that’s when the message becomes clear:
Sometimes the bravest, most aligned thing you can do is simply LET IT GO.

Not in resignation.
Not in failure.
But in devotion to who you are becoming.

Do what you can with what you have.
Take the next honest step.
Meet yourself where you are.
And then… let it go.

Let go of the grip.
Let go of the fear.
Let go of the belief that you must carry everything alone.

This is the space where trust becomes the bridge — the trust that the Universe knows exactly what it’s doing, even when you don’t. When you surrender the version of yourself that no longer fits, you create room for the one who’s been waiting to step forward.

You’re not losing anything.
You’re making space.
You’re remembering your light.
You’re coming home to yourself.

This is what growth really looks like — messy, sacred, uncomfortable, and wildly liberating.

And if you’re feeling that whisper right now, pay attention.
Your soul is telling you: “You’re ready for more.”
